RAF At War Living History Group

RAF At War crew looking at mapRAF at War are a WW2 living history group, that educate the public on what it was like to be in the Royal Air Force, both Fighter and Bomber Command, during World War Two.

This is communicated to the public through either living history scenarios/tableau: such as a Battle of Britain Fighter Command Dispersal with appropriate vehicles, uniforms and equipment, briefings to the public: briefing them as if they are a bomber crew about to go on a Ops, or general educational talks.

RAF At War crewRAF at War was formed in the year 2000 and is composed of serving personnel, ex-service personnel and civilians, all of whom do their best to show the public what is was like to be serving within the Royal Air Force at this pivotal moment in the United Kingdoms history.

The group is Essex based, but have members that come from many other areas of the country, ranging from Kent to Herefordshire and Lincolnshire.

Over the years the group have been involved in many air shows, such as:

  • Biggin Hill Air Fair 2000 to 2010
  • RIAT Fairford 2005
  • Duxford Fighter Meet 2006
  • Merlins over Malta 2005
  • Manston Battle of Britain weekend

As well as various TV documentaries and programs:

  • BBC Timewatch - Bombing Germany
  • BBC Timewatch - Battle of the Atlantic
  • History Channel - Great Escape Stories
  • History Channel - The story of Radar
  • History Channel - The Lancaster Story
  • History Channel - D-Day Secrets
  • New Zealand TV - The Kiwi that saved England
  • Lion productions - First Light (the story of Geoffrey Wellum).

RAF At War crew on standbyThe group also fully supports the Purfleet Heritage Centre and the Hornchurch Memorial museum that it contains, as well as being actively involved with RAFA, Southend Branch, helping collect for the ‘Wings Day’ appeal.

This picnic style event is a great opportunity to get out the hamper and rug or simply bring along something to sit on and take advantage of our on site caterers.

Gates will open at 3pm
Entertainment begins at 5pm
Main event begins at 6.15pm
Concert ends at 9.30pm
